Signs that your upholstery may be in need of professional cleaning

Common methods to determine how clean or dirty your upholstery is

Perform the “whack” test to release surface dust
Place a bright light over the top of one of your sofa cushions and using a stick (like a paint mixing stick or a wooden spoon) whack the cushion 2 – 3 times. Observe the amount of dust that is released into the air. If you see a cloud of dust your furniture needs to be cleaned.

Increase in allergy symptons
If you are experiencing more allergy symptoms than usual then maybe your upholstery can be the cause. Pollen, dust, and pet dander are absorbed by the furniture and gets released in the air when the furniture is disrupted. To get rid of them you have to get your upholstery deep cleaned.

Perform the “black cloth” test
Use your vacuum cleaner attachment nozzle and take a piece of thin black cloth and rubber band it to the end of the vacuum hose – let it drape into the hose a little way. Put the upholstery tool on the end of the hose. Now turn the vacuum on and run it across the top of the cushion. Take off the upholstery tool and observe all the dead skin, dander, and other particles. If you see the accumulation of fine particles, you need Professional Cleaning.

Perform the “white” towel test
Take a small amount of Windex and spray it on a white terry cloth towel. Be careful to slightly mist it on, do not overwet. Now go and briskly scrub it across one of your seat cushions or arm covers. Check the towel for soil.

Upholstery fibers feel rough
Fibers in the upholstery can pill, stretch, wrinkle, have loose threads, and feel rough when touched. When this happens you will feel uncomfortable when you are sitting on the furniture. Regular professional cleaning can help to keep this problem from occurring and help to fix any existing problems.

Perform the “sniff” test
This test will give best results if you step outside for a moment and breath fresh air. Inhale and completely exhale. Return inside and place your nose 3” above the seat cushions and waft the surface air into your nose using one hand in a fanning motion. Do you notice any odors? Soil accumulations foster bacterial growth that feed on the contaminants and creatures living in the fibers of your furniture fabrics. If your furniture smells funky or you notice any mal odors, that’s an indication it should be Professionally Cleaned as soon as possible.
